The observance of Earth Day happens every year on April 22nd. This tradition was started by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970 and continues to this day.
A few ideas for Earth Day activities are to plant a tree or garden or take a walk just to enjoy nature. Around the home, turn off lights and adjust the heating and cooling systems to a more efficient setting. This is also a great time to teach kids about the importance of saving energy and protecting our planet's natural resources. Other ideas for the community is to ask local government to place recycle bins in high pedestrian areas and organize clean-ups for area parks.
Many businesses also observe Earth Day by encouraging employees to conserve energy.
While an admirable idea, many do not encourage this conservation to happen during their normal business hours.
Businesses that are serious about Earth Day could instead ask employees to turn off their equipment for even a short time and participate in some environmental activities such as planting trees or shrubs on the grounds, holding a meeting on energy-saving ideas that the business can implement, or even cleaning up litter.
